Born in 1980, Nandan Ghiya originally received his diploma in fashion design from the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi. In recent years, Ghiya’s creative practice has led him to visual art, and he now runs a full-time artist studio in Jaipur.
The five images above are taken from Ghiya’s latest project, entitled “Download Errors.” In this series, ancestral portraits and photographs—the likes of which still fill Rajasthani homes like Ghiya's—are manually subjected to the glitching processes that plague (or revivify) digital images. Visual, cultural, and familial information is lost and tessellated, drawing attention to the depersonalizing, globalizing effects of digitalization on indigenous forms of art and memory.
